Barbara and Ernest Winborne worked from their home, mainly phone sales, setting up at
flee-markets, hair salons and consignment shops. They tested their candle until they found the
correct wax, wick and container that produced the best scent and burn time in a candle.
Their tie to Alabama is Barbara's niece, Pat Huffman. She and her husband, Rick have lived in
Calera for eleven years.
Barbara and Pat have a passion for candles and crafts. The store is designed for the frugal
shopper. Calera needs a gift shop that offers a wide variety of items for the home and
personal use.
Our candles are homemade and have a burn time of about 36 hours. Each batch is tested
before sold. The scent is all thru the candle. A few of our fragrances and colors are
listed on our website, these can be changed to anyone's nose or eyes. All of our fragrances
and colors are bought locally, which increases revenue for the community and lowers our overhead.
Soy wax holds fragrance better and last between 30% and 50% longer than a paraffin candle
of the same size. Soy candles produce less soot which keeps you and your house cleaner.
Soy is much cooler burning than other waxes.
Never leave a burning candle unattended! Keep burning candles away from children and
pets. Do not place near flammable objects such as curtains, walls, etc. Place on a protected level
surface. Keep candle free of wick trimmings, matches, or other foreign matter that
could be a fire hazard. Avoid burning in drafts. Avoid walking with lit candles. Keep wick
trimmed to 1/4 inch at all times to avoid carbon build up on the wick (mushrooming), dark smoking,
and soot in the air and on walls or furniture. Allow candle to cool before trimming
wick or relighting. Containers may become hot, handle with care! Allow candle to cool before
replacing lid on jar.
Helpful Tips:
Burn candles about 2 hours the first time, this allows flame time to melt the wax to the
outer edge. Burning less time will cause the candle to burn down the middle & shorten
burn time.
To extinguish a candle, use a candle snuffer, or hold fingers in front of the flame and blow.
This will prevent hot wax from splattering on furniture.
Problem Solving:
If a wick becomes too short to light, carve away enough wax to expose the fresh wick, then
trim 1/4 inch off the top of the candle and burn the candle to reform it's appearance. To
remove wax from washable fabrics, scrape off excess wax and run hot water through the material.
Car Fragrances Our car fragrances can be any fragrance, but the colors will vary. $3.00 ea
